  1. Aging Requirements: Straight Bourbon must be aged for at least two years in new charred oak barrels. The aging process imparts essential flavors, aromas, and colors to the spirit.
  2. Mash Bill Composition: The mash bill, the mixture of grains used to produce bourbon, must contain a minimum of 51% corn. The remainder can consist of grains like rye, barley, or wheat, allowing for a wide range of flavor profiles and styles.
  3. Production Criteria: Straight Bourbon follows strict production guidelines, ensuring consistency and quality across batches. These regulations govern distillation, proofing, and bottling processes.
Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon: Bottled-in-Bond is a more stringent designation within the bourbon category, offering consumers an additional layer of assurance regarding the whiskey's quality and authenticity. The Bottled-in-Bond Act was passed in 1897 to combat fraudulent and adulterated spirits, protecting consumers from subpar products. To bear this label, the bourbon must meet the following requirements:
  1. Extended Aging: Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon must be aged for at least four years in new charred oak barrels, providing it with a more refined and complex flavor profile.
  2. Distillation Season and Proof: Unlike Straight Bourbon, Bottled-in-Bond must be the product of one distillation season, which typically lasts from January to June or July to December. Additionally, it must be bottled at exactly 100 proof (50% alcohol by volume), showcasing its full-bodied and robust character.
  3. Single Distillery Production: Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon is produced by one distillery under the watchful eye of U.S. government supervision. This oversight ensures consistency and adherence to the highest production standards.
